El presidente de Brasil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, anunció este lunes que acudirá el martes al velatorio de Pelé, en la ciudad de Santos, para homenajear al mejor jugador nacido en el «país del fútbol».
Lula prestará sus respetos y rendirá homenaje a Edson Arantes do Nascimento ‘Pelé’ y mostrará su solidaridad a su familia a las 9.00 horas del martes, una hora antes del cierre de la capilla ardiente.
Este supondrá el primer viaje de Lula fuera de Brasilia desde que asumió la Presidencia de Brasil por tercera vez, este domingo.
El velatorio de Pelé comenzó a celebrarse este lunes y durará 24 horas, antes del entierro del exfutbolista, que tendrá lugar este martes en un cementerio de Santos, ciudad en el litoral de São Paulo donde desarrolló la mayor parte de su carrera deportiva.
Decenas de miles de personas han acudido hasta ahora al velatorio, que se realiza en el estadio Vila Belmiro, así como autoridades del mundo del fútbol, entre ellos el presidente de la FIFA, Gianni Infantino, y el de la Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez.
Pelé falleció el pasado 29 de diciembre a los 82 años de edad, debido a complicaciones médicas causadas por un cáncer de colon, que le fue detectado hace un año.
